Now Director of Stadium and Event Operations at Newcastle United, Rutherford’s journey from groundsman to senior leadership is a powerful example of career progression within a football club.

Early Foundations

Eddie Rutherford’s career began at just 17 years old, working as a groundsman at a Civil Service sports club. His early exposure to sports turf management sparked a lifelong interest in the industry. He pursued qualifications in sports ground management and later transitioned into sports centre management, laying the groundwork for a career that would span multiple disciplines within sport and event operations.

His first major role came at British Gas, where he worked in the sports division from age 20 to 26. Starting as a groundsman and eventually becoming grounds manager, Rutherford gained valuable experience in organising large-scale events—from football tournaments to fireworks displays attended by thousands. These formative years taught him the intricacies of event planning and the importance of preparation and post-event recovery. This planted the seeds of a career progression that took him from turf to venue management while still directing the grounds department at Newcastle.

A Defining Move to Newcastle United

In 2002, Rutherford joined Newcastle United for what was initially a six-month project to assist with the construction of the club’s training pitches. Watching the pitches grow in, he found himself captivated—and never left. That temporary role evolved into a permanent position, marking the beginning of a 24-year journey with the club.

Before joining Newcastle, Rutherford had also worked in golf course construction and building management, gaining project management experience and qualifications in building regulations. These skills would later prove invaluable as he transitioned into broader operational roles.

Career Growth and Mentorship

Throughout his career, Rutherford has been committed to continuous learning. Inspired by a mentor at British Gas who emphasised the value of qualifications, he pursued every course and training opportunity available. This thirst for knowledge enabled him to move seamlessly between roles in turf management, event operations, and infrastructure development.

He has also played a key role in mentoring younger staff, many of whom have grown into senior positions under his guidance. Rutherford’s leadership style is rooted in trust, consistency, and shared standards across all sites—from the stadium to the training ground and academy.

Industry Evolution and Challenges

Rutherford has witnessed significant changes in the industry over the past two decades. The standard of Premier League pitches has dramatically improved, driven by advances in technology, equipment, and scientific understanding. He takes pride in Newcastle United’s reputation for pitch quality and consistency across its facilities, an added challenge as one of the most northerly located English clubs.

One of the biggest challenges he’s faced was transitioning into stadium operations and managing multiple departments. Understanding the club’s culture and avoiding hasty changes were key lessons. He emphasises the importance of analysing existing systems before implementing new ones—and revisiting those changes to assess their impact.

The arrival of new ownership at Newcastle United brought increased investment, but also a continued focus on value and quality. Rutherford has been impressed by the club’s commitment to doing things the right way, maintaining high standards while expanding resources.

Role and Responsibilities

As Director of Stadium and Event Operations, Rutherford’s role is multifaceted. His days involve overseeing pitch maintenance, planning matchday logistics, managing infrastructure projects, and coordinating across departments. He’s currently involved in major initiatives, including a training ground extension, the development of a dedicated site for the club’s newly professional women’s teams, and feasibility studies for a potential new stadium.

Despite the demanding hours, Rutherford remains motivated by his passion for the job. He believes that enjoying what you do transforms work into something meaningful—and that passion is the key to longevity in any career.

Looking Ahead

Rutherford is proud of the club’s growth since the ownership change, particularly the doubling of the grounds team and the alignment of operations across all sites. He sees exciting times ahead, with infrastructure projects, expanded facilities, and the upcoming Euro 2028 presenting new opportunities and challenges.

He’s especially proud of the club’s commitment to women’s football, with new facilities and professional pathways now in place. These developments reflect a broader shift in the sport and align with Rutherford’s belief in inclusive, forward-thinking operations.

Advice and Reflections

For those entering the industry, Rutherford offers clear advice: pursue what you’re passionate about, and don’t make career changes without a genuine interest in the new path. He encourages aspiring grounds managers to embrace learning, seek out qualifications, and remain open to new opportunities.

His own journey—from turf care to top-level operations—demonstrates that with dedication, curiosity, and a love for the game, it’s possible to build a career that not only spans decades but also shapes the future of a football club.
